Awards & Press

Wine & Spirits Magazine names Handley Cellars a "Value Brand of the Year," announced in the June 2008 issue.

What: Cool-climate whites from one of the benchmark names of Anderson Valley
Standout: The '06 Anderson Valley Pinot Gris is layered and complex, easily among the best pinot gris made in California. Likewise, Handley's '06 Anderson Valley Gewurztraminer is an Alsatian rock star hiding out on California's north coast. Both run $18.

Where: Milla Handley owns vineyards in Anderson Valley and Dry Creek Valley, and her winery is located outside of Philo, CA.

When: Open a bottle of Pinot Gris with grilled weisswurst, while the Gewurztraminer, with its spicy citrus flavors and bright acidity, is the choice for Thai curry."

Bold and exuberant, with a dark pink hue and raspberry, citrus and spice notes that finish with a crisp, intense focus.

Milla Handley is better known for her Pinot Noir and Gewurztraminer, but this limited-production sparkler relies on her abilities with Pinot to create a headily scented drink. A nose of flowers, pepper cookies and strawberries leads to a lean, stoic wine with lots of structure from 94 percent estate-grown Pinot.

2005 Handley Cellars Estate Vineyard Anderson Valley Chardonnay ($20)

What sold us: Made entirely from organically grown grapes, this is winemaker Milla Handley's first organically certified wine (the certification process takes three years). Ripe aromas and flavors - pear, apple and lemon bonbon - plus a touch of green herb meld into a wine with understated style.

Names Handley Cellars Best Mendocino Producer

25th Anniversary Issue (Fall 2007)

"Milla Handley has impressed us for years with the subtle pleasures of her Anderson Valley wines. Her fresh and mouthwatering whites are consistently at the top of their class."

93 points, 2006 Anderson Valley Gewurztraminer

There's a hint of rose if you search for it, but this is not aggressively floral. Instead, it's fresh, chalky, crisp and clean, like biting into a fresh litchi. Firm acidity drives the wine, cutting right through the fruit to deliver its flavor into the meat of whatever is for dinner. It'd be delicious with Thai-style catfish with ginger.

94 points, 2006 Anderson Valley Pinot Gris

There's coastal freshness to this wine's luscious fruit, and that freshness lasts. Plump and delicious when first poured, the citrus and nectarine flavors deepen and feel more structured the next day. It has the mouthwatering effect of a bite of crisp cucumber, with the textural roundness for fleshy fish, like roast halibut.
