Letter from Winemaker Milla Handley

Milla Handley

In my life, there has always been a strong connection between food, wine, and art. I grew up surrounded by my family’s international folk art collection. As a child, I was sometimes allowed to taste wines at the dinner table, where we enjoyed foods from all over the world.

When I started Handley Cellars, label designers asked me about interests and associations that might inspire the Handley image. I kept coming back to the primitive, geometric designs in the folk art I’d lived with as a child. The concept of art inspired by nature goes hand in hand with my philosophy of making wine that reflects its terroir.

Heidi Cusick, one of my first tasting room managers, was a talented chef. Inspired by Handley’s folk art collection, she experimented with ethnic recipes, which went perfectly with the bright acidity and fresh fruit flavors of Handley wine. Heidi’s “Culinary Adventure” food and wine pairing program was one of the first of its kind. See the "Recipes" section for new "Culinary Adventure" recipes.
